[DSの安全性:50の根拠 ]

 前2項でヘッドランプのコントロールをシトロエン広報誌;ダブルシェブロンから紹介しましたが、一層のこと全てを紹介してしまう方が良かろうと考えました。「DSの50周年に50の安全性」も最適であろうし、このブログの総まとめでもあると思います。
 良いデザイン画とその説明文の形をとっていますし、英文も平易ですから1冊丸ごと転載したいところですが、文字が小さいので拡大して載せると「バイト数」が過大になりますので(5cm ×5cm を1ブロックとしたイラストと文章で構成するのを基本としたデザインです)全文打ち込みましたが、同一文体ですので2)以降では字数を減らす為に「出だしの類似文」を省略しました。修正してはFDに移して思案しましたが(いじっている内にどこかえ無くなってしまわ無いように)1KB減らす程度でガッカリしています。 百数十号全ての内でも、この号がベストの1冊ですから(シトロエン社の最盛期;1967年頃)全体をゼロックス・カラーコピーする価値はありますが、著作権の問題もあるでしょう・・・

01)This is [a disc brake] But it is no ordinary one: it is a Citroen disc brabe which is fitted to the ID and DS front wheels ( where the load is greatest ). Disc Brakes are better cooled and do not fade or ovalize. In 1955, Citroen was the first to fit disc brakes as standard equipment on production cars.
02)[a disc cariper assembly] It is operated, very progressively, by hydraulic power which greatly increases the pressure applied by the driver to the brake pedal.
03)[a brake lining pad] The lining pad incorporates a wear indicator consisting of a wire moulded in the linig and which, when a certain degree of wear is reached, makes an electrical contact and operates a warning light on the dashboad.
04)[a braking system] The Citroen double circuit braking system which is fitted to the ID and DS. Any pressure on the brake pedel operates both braking circuits independently, front and rear: whatever may happen, the brakes will function.
05)[a "parking" brake mechanism] This auxiliary brake is better than a "parking" brake: it is a proper emergency brake which operates calipers independently of the main braking circuits.

06)[a brake pedal] Based on an entirely new principle, it combines the brake proper and its hydraulic power device in the same unit. Braking effort is assisted in direct proportion to the pressure applied to the pedal(which has a very short travel) and it is therefore very easy to operate.
07)[a pedal arrangement] They are Citroen pedals which are fitted to the "hydrauric" DS. Only two pedals, the clutch is automatic. One foot for the accelerator and one for brake: quicker reflexes and increased driving safety.
08)[a brake pressure distributor] It is automatic : all variations in the loading of the car automatically balance the braking pressure between front and rear wheels.
09)[a brake air cooling duct/nozzle] (according to the illustration selected). Not only are the dics brakes set away from the wheels for better cooling (and better protection) but there are also special air ducts which channel cold air directly onto them: the faster the car travels, the better the brakes are cooled.
10)[a headlamp] It is fitted to the DS 21 Pallas. They are quartz iodine headlamps which are for more powerful and have a much longer life than conventional headlamps. They permit night driving at high speed and in complete safety.

11)[an auxiliary headlamp] It is serial on DS 21 Pallas and optional on the ID and DS. It turns according to the steering lack of the front wheels for lighting the curves. It thus seriously increases night driving safety.
12)[a head-lamp] It is one of Citroen automatic self levelling head lamps which are fitted to the DS 21. This original patent enables an extremely supple suspension to be combined with a powerful engine whilst ensuring that the light beams from the head lamps remain level despite variations in the attitude of the car while breaking or accelerating.
13)[a seat] Designed to give anatomical suport, it is soft enough to avoid fatigue but at the same time firm enough to support the body properly. It slides backwards and forwards and the backrest can tilted right back to form a bunk bed.
14)[a sun-visor] Like most sun-visors it is padded and pivots up and down, but it can also be swung over to shade the side window and its telescopic arm enables it to be moved across the windscreen.
15)[a door handle] Not only has its shape been designed to avoid any sharp angles or projections, but it also has a safety catch which prevents it from being opened inadvertantly (children in the car,etc.).

16)[a windscreen] Not only has its shape and size been designed to provide maximum visibility, but also the pillars has been made very slender in order to eliminate any blind spots and the distance between them has been calculated according to the angle of binoculor vision.
17)[a speedometer] It indicates the average braking distance required for various speeds; a safety reminder constantly before the eyes of the driver.
18)[a protective padding] It surounds the interior of the car. Other paddings protects the occupants in the event of impact: notably on the dashboad (filled with nylon foam) and the backs of the front seats which are padded for the protection of passengers in the rear.
19)[a dashboard] The single spoke steering wheel gives a completely uninterrupted view of the instrument panel. The instrument panel and warning lights are shaded to avoid reflections.
20)[a gear selector] It can be operated with one finger without letting go of the steering wheel. On the ID and the manual DS, the gear lever is also situated under the steering wheel for safe driving.

21)[a demister] In addition to very sophisticated air conditioning and windscreen demisting defrosting systems. Citroen has provided special demisters which blow hot air onto the side windows in order to maintain perfect visibility.
22)[a rear view mirror] It is the "day/night" mirror fitted to the DS. It has two positions, a normal day setting and an anti-dazzle setting for night driving. Thus the driver is never inconvenienced at night by the light of following vehicles.
23)[a windscreen wiper] The pressure of the wiper blades and the large area swept have been designed to ensure good visibility at any speed, it can cope with any conditions and thus avoid visual strain.
24)[a window] In order to provide completely unobstructed visibility, the windows are frameless and have no vents (which are replaced by ventilators on the dashboad). The greater glass surface area provides maximum all round visibility.
25)[a track of a car] (the distance between the left and right hand wheels). It is the front track of the Citroen ID and DS :1.5 m, is one of the widest in the world compared with the length of the vihicle. The rear track is narrower, 1.3 m., for shorter cornering and to reduce overall weight without impairing roadholding.

26)[a plan of weight distribution] Following principle of front wheel drive applied by Citroen since 1934, all the mechanical components are placed at the front, thereby increasing the adherence of the driving-steering wheels and moving the center of gravity forward to obtain better roadholding.
27)[a height corrector] The hydraulic height corrector reacts to any variation of loading maintaining normal ground clearance and ensureing that roadholding is unimpaired.
28)[a back of a car] It will be seen that the wheels are placed well back and the body overhang, so great in some cars, is practically negligible. This is an advantage, not only for towing purposes, but it also increases the dynamic stability of the car.
29)[a suspension spring] It is one of the of the Citroen hydropneumatic suspension. Conventional steel springs are replaced by four spheres which are far more efficient, In each of these spheres, the interplay between a fluid (non compressible) and a gas (compressible) provides perfect road holding and complete comfort.
30)[a shock absorber] It is a hydropnuematic suspension shock absorber. Shocks are absorbed by restricting the flow of fluid between the spheres and the suspension cylinders. It provides good roadholding, controls oscillation and prevents wheel bounce and body sway.

31)[a wheelbase of a car] (the distance between the front wheel and the back wheel). Longest in the world compared to the overall length of the car (3.12 m into 4.84 m) This long wheelbase increases the stability of the car. Also, with the back wheels positioned well to the rear, roadholding is improved.
32)[a pivoted hub wheel] It has the largest transmission bearings in the world and the steering ball joints are in the same plane as the wheel. Thus the unevenness of the ground, badly adjusted brakes, or a front tyre burst at speed have no effect on the steering and do not tend to pull the car off its course.
33)[an axle shaft] This shaft is mounted on very large bearings, and each wheel is independent with ample free movement. This is one of the secrets of Citroen cars: perfect stability on the roughest ground.
34)[a steering unit] Being power assisted , no reaction can be felt on the steering wheel even when driving over the roughest ground. It is just sufficiently positive to respond immediately to any quick movement necessary to avoid an obstacle. It also avoids driving fatigue even on the most winding roads.
35)[a tyre] It is a Michelin X AS tyre. This tyre, which an asymmetric casting, represents the most advanced development in radial ply tyres. It is fitted as standard to the ID and DS.

36)[a front axle] Following the princeple of front wheel drive applied by Citroen since 1934, the front wheels both drive and steer the car, increasing cornering stability and preventing skidding.
37)[a car boot] It is very deep and the sides and floor are at 90°to avoid dead angles. But, in particular, it is situated very low between the wheels and chassis members which, when it is loaded, lowers the center of gravity and thereby increases stability.
38)[a single spoke steering wheel] It is called "the life saving steering wheel". In the event of a violent head-on collision, the steering wheel collapses, and the body of the driver slides over the curved spoke and so avoids injury.
39)[a back part of a chassis] The rear chassis has a variable strength structure: the rigid chassis members protect the passengers (in the center) whist the rear wings and the boot are of crushable sheet metal which will collapse in the event of a collision at the rear and so absorb a part of the impact.
40)[a car chassis] This hollow box platform design enable the center of gravity to be kept as low as possible thereby increasing the car's stability and roadholding.

41)[a chassis member] It is one of the two side members of the Citroen ID and DS chassis. Of large size , this parallelepiped section member is designed according to the princeple of greater strength from hollow members, which is well known in aircraft construction. In the event of impact from the side. It protects the occupants of the car, seated within the chassis framework.
42)[a front of a chassis] These cars have a variable strength structure: they consist of a rigid chassis to which lighter sheet metal bodywork is attached. In the event of a head-on collision, an area of crushable sheet metal absorbs part of the frontal impact before it is transmitted to the rest of the car.
43)[a spare wheel] It is stowed in front of the engine bonnet (which is relatively long and crushable). Togather with the radiator situated behind it, it can act as a shock absorber in the event of a head-on collision.
44)[a front fairing] Not only does it protect the mechanical components and the brakes from mud and stones, but its curvature eliminates air turbulance under the body and reduces the "lift" which tends to raise the car off the ground at speed.
45)[a side of a car body] Its curve has been carefully designed to offer the least resistance to cross-winds and to place the aerodynamic center of pressure to the rear of the center of gravity in order to increase the aerodynamic stability of the vihicle.

46)[a petral tank] It is not at the rear of the vehicle and thus exposed to impact as is the case in most cars, but is placed forward of the wheels and is thereby better protected. It is in a special compartment which isolates it completely from the rest of the car and in the event of violent collision it will empty outside the car.
47)[a front bumper] Its inverted V shape tends to fend off obstacles to one side or the other of the car and to offset the impact in the event of a light collision.
48)[a windscreen] It is a laminated glass windscreen which is fitted to the Citroen DS. It consists of two sheet of the glass stuck together with a layer of transparent plastic. Resistance to impact is considerably improved and in the event of a violent blow, the windscreen does not shatter.
49)[a aerodynamic shape of a car] The rear wheel fairing, the streamlined front, the sloping bonnet, the curved windscreen, the short back and the absence of projections all contribute to reducing "drag", improving air penetration and increasing the stability of the car at speed.
50)[a safety harness] It is the Citroen safety harness which is fitted (optionally) to the ID and DS. Citroen was one of the first manufacturers to provide safety harness fixing points as a standard feature on production cars.

51)[a direction indicator light] It is placed at roof level so that it cannot possibly be confused with the tail and stop lights.
